When most people think about shopping for items to sell on eBay, they think of going to thrift stores like Goodwill, Savers, the Salvation Army and various independent thrift stores. But did you know you can also take a look in antique stores to find items to sell on eBay?

Many antique stores have inflated prices, especially those that are in high traffic tourist areas, but there are often items that fall through the cracks and a profit can be made on them. Also, sometimes the sellers are just tired of things hanging around too long so they put certain items on sale. If you hit it right, you can find some really great bargains. In order to make a profit on these items, you have to know your antiques and collectibles or have your phone with you so you can look up the items on your phone, to see what they are selling for on eBay.

I love to peruse antique stores and when I do, I am always looking for that treasure that will bring me a profit on eBay. Of course, overall you will do better shopping at thrift stores for eBay items in terms of pricing, but antique stores have some unusual items of which you may not be aware.

Here are some examples:

This is a sculpture by Michael Garman. His sculptures are expensive and my husband has one that reminds him of the city he grew up in. One day we were browsing in an antique store and he found this sculpture. He immediately recognized it as Garman's work and checked the price. It was originally marked as $70.00 but it was on sale that day for $35.00. While it is not exactly the style of our home, he was thrilled and purchased it. It is currently on display in his office (as his the cityscape sculpture) and when we looked it up on eBay, this same sculpture that he paid $35.00 for is listed on eBay for $165.00 so he did well with that buy!

Now we are not going to sell it on eBay because my husband loves it and is proud of the deal he got, but we COULD list it on eBay someday and even if it doesn't sell for that much money, he would at least get three times the money he spent on it. My husband looks for Garman sculptures in every antique store we go to now!

Another example of items that one might find in an antique store to sell on eBay is this Disney Hallmark snow globe. I had read recently that snow globes and Disney sell well on eBay. So when I came across this snow globe at an antique store for $16.00 I checked the comps on eBay and they were selling for $30 to $45. I bought it and listed it on eBay and within one month, I sold it for $34.00. Once I took the percentage out for eBay and Paypal costs, I still made a profit of $14.00.

If I had found that snow globe at a Goodwill or thrift store, I probably wouldn't have had to pay as much for it, but to me, a profit is a profit and $14.00 is nothing to sneer at! So don't overlook antique stores when you are searching for items to sell on eBay.

Have you ever found anything at an antique store that you sold for a profit on eBay? Please leave a comment below and explain what it was and how much you paid and sold it for so others can learn what to look for.

Are you an eBay seller who is frustrated because you aren't making the kind of money you had hoped to earn from eBay? Well, I have the perfect answer for you: Get eBay support for free on the internet.

You may not realize it, but eBay sellers for the most part, are a great group of people who are very happy to help other ebay sellers out by answering questions and making suggestions as to help you be a better eBay seller.

eBay Sellers on Youtube

I have been an eBay seller for eight years now. When I first started I didn't know anyone else that sold on eBay. But I met someone at a writer's site that coached me. I started selling a lot more with his help. Then he suggested I start following some people on YouTube that are very successful eBay sellers. So I did, and wow, what an amazing amount of information I received by following those people. Three of my favorites to follow on Youtube are Raiken Profit, Suzanne A. Wells and States Place.

eBay Sellers on Facebook

From some of those people on Youtube, I learned about some Facebook groups. eBay Facebook groups are free to join and people in these groups can ask each other questions, and offer each other support and suggestions. One of my favorite things about these facebook groups is they often post BOLO (be on the lookout) items that they have found and recently sold for great prices. My favorite Facebook eBay groups to join are: ebay selling basics nothing but ebay basics and Camp eBay. Suzanne A. Wells has a nice facebook page dedicated to eBay sellers under her name and she posts items people paid very little for and sold for a nice profit on eBay.

eBay Sellers on Instagram

I recently have been having fun on Instagram as well. When I was looking for people to follow on Instagram, I decided to try to find some people that were selling on eBay and follow them. Searching for people to follow on Instagram is easy because all you have to do is fill in words on the top search bar. Words like "eBay," "thrifter," "thrifting," and "reseller" will bring up many others who are also selling on eBay. You can click on their profiles and see if they are eBay sellers. I have found that it is much better to follow Instagrammers who have more than just a few posts on their profile page. You can learn more from those who have been selling for awhile and are active on Instagram. These frequent posters often post great finds from thrift stores so that you get ideas of things to look for when you are out thrifting for eBay. I find following eBay sellers on Instagram very motivating because they often post encouraging phrases that helps keep us all motivated. I also recommend following States Place on Instagram well.

Some of the Instagram eBay sellers also sell on Posh and Mercari, so if you are interested in either of those, Instagram is the place to be to learn from each other and encourage each other in terms of selling online.

Okay, I have given you MY recommendations for people to follow on social media to help you make more money on eBay. Do you know of someone I forgot? Please post their name in the comments below so we can all learn more, and earn more on eBay!

And if you are just getting started selling on eBay, I just gave you a lot of ideas of people to follow and learn from. You can also head over to this post I wrote awhile ago about how to get started selling on eBay if you are new to the whole eBay thing.

Happy Selling!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-56365766311768504842017-11-30T22:06:00.000-08:002017-11-30T22:06:01.870-08:00Don't Forget to Edit Your Photos on eBay
I have been selling items on eBay since 2010, and have been a serious seller since 2012. I am therefore embarrassed to admit to you that I have only recently discovered how to edit photos on eBay. I follow an expert eBay seller on YouTube, and was reading a blog entry of hers about two weeks ago. One of her tips was to edit the photos of your eBay items. For some reason, I had never discovered that eBay photos are able to be edited.

Some of you reading this probably already knew about the editing function on your eBay listings, but this post is for those of you who don't know.

In order to edit your photos on eBay, as you load your pictures onto your item's listing, look under the photo just after it is uploaded and shows up in the large frame on the left. Underneath that picture, you will see a series of symbols. I can't seem to print the screen on my computer so this picture below is the best I can do.

Underneath each photo in that left-hand position, you will see a series of symbols. The first one on the left is to crop the picture so you can show a closer view. The second one with the arrow allows you to rotate the photo. The one in the middle that looks like the sun is to adjust the brightness and contrast. The next one, that looks like a triangle is to sharpen the photo and bright it more into focus. And the last symbol is for auto adjust.

I have a lot of fun editing my photos now that I have discovered these options. And I have noticed many of the items I have cropped and made brighter have actually sold fairly quickly after I did so.

If you already knew how to crop your eBay photos, that's great. And if not, come back and leave a comment below as to how much quicker your items have sold once you learned how to edit them.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-69051124516011174472017-08-31T20:55:00.000-07:002017-08-31T21:23:25.326-07:00Ties Are Easy to Sell on eBay

I love selling ties on eBay. I don't have a lot of extra storage room in my house for eBay items so I find ties a very easy thing to store and sell. Ties fold up nicely and although they may not sell for a LOT of money, I like the fact that they sell easily and also are easy to ship.

When I first started selling items on eBay, I watched a few YouTube videos about what to sell on eBay. If you sell men's clothing, a good guy to watch on YouTube is "Raiken Profit." I watched some of his videos on selling men's clothing, including ties and added ties to my list of things to look for at Goodwill and thrift stores to purchase to resell on eBay.

When I actually started looking in stores for them, I was thrilled. I can purchase ties in the thrift stores I shop at anywhere from 25 cents up to $2.99. But since I shop on Senior Day at Goodwill, I get 25% off, and never pay more than $2.25 for a tie. I am fortunate to be able to find brand name men's ties at the thrift stores in my area. Names include Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ermenegildo Zegna. I price them at a range of $12.95 to $14.95,include free shipping, and often use Markdown Manager to put them on sale. I don't make a huge profit but can make between $6.00 and $8.00 per tie. And that works for me. Could I sell ties for more money? Maybe, but I might have to wait a long time and I like the quick turnover.

The photo above shows the container I use to store my ties. It's compact and can hold 40 ties.It measures 16 1/2 inches by 11 1/2 inches and is 6 inches deep. When I sell a tie, I just pull out the box, find the tie that sold, put it in a plastic bag, put it in an envelope and ship it for less than $3.00.

I sell a lot of clothing on eBay and my prices range from $15.00 to $100.00. It's great to have some items that are easy to sell and ship that are lower priced items that will attract eBay shoppers who may purchase something more expensive while they are in my store. I think having a variety of prices on my eBay items attract a larger number of eBay buyers so selling ties on eBay works great for me.

Do you sell ties on eBay?

The other day I listed an Orvis shirt on eBay for $26.95 or best offer. My best offer was anywhere from $19.95 and up. It sold in approximately two days...oops, I immediately knew that was a mistake. And it was a mistake on my part.

Here's what happened: I buy a lot of Orvis men's shirts at thrift stores to re-sell on eBay. This one I found was $4.99 and it was a nice heavy Orvis shirt. I thought because it was heavy and in very good condition, that I should list it higher than I sell most of my Orvis shirts for, which is usually about $18.95. It was also a bit unusual looking because it was a pullover with snaps at the neck and sleeves. Most of the Orvis shirts I sell button up the front. But I was in a hurry and so listed it for $27.95 with the best offer. The thing that I missed was that on the label it had the word "Malpai." I used it on the description of the shirt, but that should have alerted me to the fact that it was a bit unique and therefore may be worth more money. You can see the word Malpai on the label below.

After it sold, I checked comparative listings on eBay. They had the same types of shirts in different colors for between $31.49 and $49.99. Then I checked the "solds" category and that showed me that the Malpai shirts had sold for between $18 and $59.99, with most of them selling for the $30 and higher range. Ugh, I could have kicked myself.

But it's just a reminder that if you find something a bit unusual to sell on eBay that is unlike items you usually sell, always do your research and check what similar items have sold for before you list it or you could lose money.

I am sure I could have gotten at least $10.00 to $15.00 more for that shirt. "Live and Learn" as they say. Have you ever sold something on eBay and then realized after the sale that you sold it too low?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-9507177902602714012017-05-02T10:36:00.002-07:002017-05-02T10:49:27.728-07:00Oops, I Did it Again...(Made Money on eBay While in Vacation!)

Hello All!

Yes, I am very happy to report that I did it again and once again am thrilled to report that I was able to earn money on eBay while I was on vacation. This was the longest vacation I have ever taken while an eBay seller, and I had my doubts about whether or not this would work. But I am happy to give you this report:

How Much I Earned

While on vacation for 18 days, I sold 9 items and had gross earnings of $154.65!

Okay, that's not a lot you might be thinking, BUT if I had closed my eBay store while I was away, I would have had no sales for a total of $0.00. That means nada!

Our Vacation

My husband and I just returned from a 14-day cruise across the Atlantic Ocean from Florida to Southampton, England stopping in Bermuda, Ireland, England and France along the way. We ended in Southampton, England and spent a few days in London since we were so close. I am not telling you this to brag, but to let you know it is possible to take a long term vacation and still earn money on eBay.

The Key to Making Money on eBay While on Vacation

The key to going away on vacation and still earning money on eBay is to make sure you extend your handling time (how long you have to ship items) on all of your items for sale. Since we were going to be away 18 days, I put my store on vacation but still allowed people to see my items and purchase them. eBay will then put a statement across the top of the screen that says the seller is on vacation which may result in delayed shipment. That way the buyer knows up front that there may be a wait for shipping. I extended my handling time to 20 days.

Bulk Editing Makes it Easy

If you have a store, you can use the bulk edit feature and do 50 items at a time. That makes it easier. I had 350 items so I had seven pages of items to change the handling time on, BUT with the bulk edit feature, I just did it seven times. Uf you don't have a store, I am not sure what the length of time is that you can extend your handling time to. If any of you don't have a store and can check that out, please let us know in the comments.

Minimal Work Required

Now, this is not to say I didn't do any work while on vacation. But the work I did was minimal because the internet is very expensive on a cruise ship so I didn't spend too much time on it. We stayed overnight in a hotel in Florida the night before the cruise. That night, and the next morning, I revised five of my items each day. (Even if you don't have anything new to list, eBay likes to see activity on your account, so always try to revise at least five items a day). Then we set sail on the cruise ship, and I didn't do anything for 11 days!

On our 11th day at sea, I logged onto my eBay account and was happy to see that three items had sold, even though the waiting for shipment was 20 days! I spent one hour online updating and revising my items that needed to be relisted. Since the 11th day was a Sunday and I like to end my auctions on Sunday, I relisted 40 of my items as auction items and just relisted the rest as 30-day Buy it Now. And that was it during the cruise.

Once we got off the cruise ship and were at the hotel in London, I spent about 20 minutes each night revising items. It made for a nice relaxing vacation and I still made money!

Finding a Grandpa Sweater

I was at a Goodwill store, my favorite place to shop for items to sell on eBay, and came across a rather ugly looking sweater. You can see it above. It's the kind of sweater that your grandfather might wear around his house, especially if he lives in an old farmhouse that is drafty.

The brand name was Willis and Geiger Outfitters, and I had never heard of that name before. But the sweater was in great condition, and it was heavy so that meant warm. It was also fully lined. Something about it spoke to me and just made me want to check it out to possibly resell it on eBay

Researching on eBay

I pulled out my trusty cell phone and looked up similar sweaters to see what they had sold for on eBay. You can imagine my surprise when I saw that some that were similar were listed for between $40.00 and $195.00. But the key is always to also check out what items have sold for. The "sold" listings of similar sweaters were between best offers of below $39.95 and up to $139.95. Now we are talking!

I was quite excited and bought the sweater, at a 25% discount because of course, I shopped at Goodwill on Sr. discount day! Normally $6.75, I purchased the sweater for $5.07 after the discount.

Pricing Dilemna

Next, I had a dilemna...how much should I list this sweater for? If I listed it high, and it took a long time to sell, I could be sitting on it for a very long time. Plus it was February and people would be more likely to buy a heavy sweater when it was still cold outside. That gave me a short window before spring came if I wanted to sell it quickly.

I Don't Run a Storage Facility

I had recently watched a video by Nicole States on Youtube. She has a lot of Youtube videos about how much she sells on eBay, brand names she likes to sell, hauls she gets from Goodwill to resell on eBay, etc. If you haven't watched her videos, and you want to learn how to sell things on eBay quickly, I highly recommend her. But getting back to the reason I brought her up, she clearly stated in one of her videos she does not run a storage facility. She meant that she doesn't like to list things super high and then have to store them for long periods of time until they sell. I don't have a lot of storage room in my home so in some ways, I feel the same. BUT I am also not in the habit of giving things away in my eBay store, so needed to find a price I would be happy with that wouldn't take too long to sell the sweater.

Listng Price

I decided to list the sweater for 30 days at a price I would be happy to get. I listed this "Grandpa Sweater" as I like to call it, for $59.95 plus the buyer paid shipping. It took about three weeks, but it did sell. I got the price I wanted and the buyer gave positive feedback and seemed quite happy with his new sweater.

Ahhh, I just love selling on eBay!

If you would like to find a Willis and Geiger Sweater of your own to sell on eBay, here's a picture of the label below.

Have you ever seen this brand or do you sell it on eBay? Would you have paid that much for this sweater on eBay?

I am writing this post for those of you who have never sold anything on eBay before. It can be quite intimidating for anyone who is new to selling on eBay. I wish I had started selling on eBay much earlier than I did. It would have been the perfect work for me when I was a stay-at-home mom, but I was scared I would do it wrong and the fear kept me from getting started.

In fact, the very first time I ever sold something on eBay, I had to have my 16-year-old daughter help me. This was in 2010 and I didn't even know how to download a picture from my camera onto my computer. This knowledge is a necessity for anyone who wants to start selling on eBay.

Don't let fear keep you from getting started selling on eBay. It's a great way to make extra money and clean the clutter from your house and life!

So here are some steps to help the beginner get started selling on eBay...

1) Open a Paypal Account

Most people pay for their eBay items using Paypal. It's easier for buyers and for sellers to use the Paypal system than a credit card and eBay sellers get their money faster this way. I will include a link to Paypal at the end of this post.

2) Open an eBay Account

This goes without saying but I thought it should be included anyway. If you have an eBay account that you have opened as a buyer, then you are all set. You can buy and sell on eBay from the same account.

3) Find Items to Sell on eBay

Comb your house for anything that you want to get rid of or don't need anymore and put all of these items in a certain area of your house.

4) Research, Research, Research

Do some research on eBay as to how much these items are selling for. There is a search box at the top of your eBay account page so you plug in what you want to sell there. If anyone else is currently selling the same item, you will get a list of those items on the screen.

Although it's important to know how much the item is listed for, you also want to know how much that item has sold for in the past. Go to the left side of your screen and you will see a list of things, including the word "sold". Check the box next to sold and a list of all of the same item that has recently sold will appear. That will tell you what you can reasonably expect to receive for your item.

If there is more than one of your item listed, you don't want to be the highest price and you also don't want to be the lowest because many potential buyers will thank there is something wrong with your item and not trust you. Somewhere in the middle is a good starting point.

5) Prepare Your Items for Sale

If you want to sell a pair of shoes that has been sitting in the back of your closet for awhile, make sure to dust them off, use a leather conditioner, or even shoe polish on them if necessary. You want your items to look their very best. Clean your items and if you are selling clothing, wash and iron them if necessary.

6) Take Great Pictures of the Items you Wish to Sell

eBay is currently giving eBay sellers 12 free pictures to use in their descriptions when listing items to sell on eBay. Take advantage of every one if possible. You can take a picture of every view...straight on, from the top, from the sides, of the bottom, etc. I purchased a CD set today and although the price was fairly good from one seller, there was only one picture of the item, whereas the other 8 sellers had many pictures included so I could actually see the items I was purchasing, outside of the cd package. You can probably surmise that I purchased the set from someone whose price was a bit higher but I trusted them more because I was able to actually see what I was buying.

If you are selling clothing you can take pictures of the item from the front, back, close up of the front so buyers can see the design better, a close up of any pockets, definitely take a picture of the brand and size tags, and any extra buttons sewn into the inside of the item, sleeve buttons, a picture of the collar buttoned, and if there's a lining, say in a coat, make sure to take a picture of that.

If you decide to sell shoes, make sure to get the top, sides, the back, bottom (soles), a close-up shot of the label, a shot of the size, a picture of any ties or buckles, and if the heels are worn on one side, etc.

If you are selling an actual item, say a snowglobe, get pictures of it from all sides and the bottom. A close up of the inside is helpful as well so potential buyers can see exactly what it, or any other item you're selling looks like.

If you are selling any items that are "new with tags" make sure to get a picture of the tags, and the price, especially if the price is a lot higher than what you are selling it for. People will realize what a deal they are getting.

Now load those pictures onto your computer (get help from your kids if you don't know how to do it!) and start your listing.

7a) List Your Item for Sale

When you start listing, you look for the word "sell" across the top of your eBay account page. Click on that word and a space will show up for you to write your title. Be as descriptive as possible in your title and include the brand name of your item first. For instance, if you are selling a Ralph Lauren women's blazer, you would want to lead with the words "Ralph Lauren."

Once you have put in your title, you will have a list of two or three categories to choose from. Click on the one that best describes your item, then go down the list and fill in the blanks about it. Fill in as much as you can...the more information you have about it the better for the buyer.

There is a space for the description and you will need to make sure you put a lot of information there. But do it in brief phrases, all starting from the left-hand side. Do not write your description in paragraph form because people looking at your item in a cell phone will not be able to see the whole description.

Here's an example of what you can put in the description:

Ralph Lauren Women's Black/Cream Tweed Blazer

100% Wool

1 button front

4 buttons on each sleeve

2 pockets on the front

1 extra button included

Equestraian style buttons with horse heads

Fully lined

Lining: black

Dry clean only

In good pre-owned condition

No rips, stains or tears

Size 10 Petite

Measurements:

Armpit to armpit: 19 inches

Shoulder to shoulder: 16 inches

Length: 26 inches

Here is a picture of the blazer I am describing:

Include as many pictures as you can.

Decide if you want to sell your item as an auction item or as a "Buy it Now" item. The difference is that a BIN item is listed fo 30 days and an auction item is listed for a shorter time. Some people don't want to wait for an auction to end which is why it's good to offer an auction item with a BIN price. If an item is an everyday object and there are many listed on eBay already, you probably want to list it as BIN.

If it's rare, is very expensive, listing it as an auction item makes sense because you may get more money than you think it's worth.Gone are the days where start their auctions at 99 cents, though. Times have changed within eBay and more often than not, an item actually ends up selling for 99 cents. It's important to start an auction item on eBay at the lowest price you would be happy with.

Decide on a price based on your research. If you choose to do an auction and include a Buy it Now price, that price must be at least 30% higher than the price at which you started your auction.

Decide what you will do about shipping. It helps if you have a postal scale but if you don't, you can ship in a flat rate priority mail box, available for free from your post office. Or just figure out the weight as best as you can. If you don't want to fool around with the weight, you can offer free shipping, but make sure you add extra money into your price so that the buyer is actually paying for shipping. Books, CDs, other types of music or media can be shipped through media mail which takes longer but is much less expensive. I have never paid more than $3.00 to ship something media mail.

Decide how many days it will take you to ship. Most buyers love "same day" or "next day" shipping, but if you can't get to the post office that often, or don't have much time to pack and ship, you can choose a longer handling time.

7b) Click the "List Now" Button and Congratulate Yourself

Once you have filled out all of that information, proofread everything, and then click on that magic phrase, "List Item" and congratulations, you have listed your first item for sale on eBay!

Here's the link to open a Paypal account if you live in the US:

https://www.paypal.com/us/home

If you live outside the US, Google Paypal with the abbreviation for your country after it....if you live in the United Kingdom you would Google Paypal UK, etc.

To sign up for an eBay account just Google eBay and the link will come up.

I am excited to share with you today how selling snow globes and Disney items on eBay can bring in good money. Last week I was fortunate enough to find an item that was so awesome, it combined both Disney and snowglobes to show me the money!!!

Treasure Hunting at Goodwill

I was at a Goodwill in Dawsonville, Georgia and happened to be near the end of my treasure hunting experience for the day. This is the time I start getting a bit weary. If you source items to sell on Bay at thrift stores you probably know what I am talking about. Your brain is filled with the many items you have been searching through to find just the right treasures that will boost your eBay income. Your eyes are a bit blurry. You've accessed your phone so many times to check comparative eBay listings that you hope you have enough to get you through the end of the month...

The Day's Best Treasure

And there it was...a Disney Princess Jasmine picture frame with a snowglobe just sitting on a shelf with the other knick knacks and doo dads...the creme de la creme of Disney items. But guess what...I didn't even realize it when I saw it. I just picked it up because I had heard Disney items and snowglobes sell well on eBay. And I noticed the snowglobe after I picked it up.

When I looked it up on the eBay app on my phone (and please tell me that when you are shopping for eBay treasure at thrift stores and Goodwill that you DO search for comparable listings on eBay BEFORE you buy them???) I was amazed at what I saw.

This particular version of this item was listed at, and sold for anywhere from between $21.95 to $75.00!!! Crazy don't you think? Below is a list of some of the reasons it was commanding so much money:

*It's a Disney product

*It also has a snow globe on it

*It's been discontinued so that means there's a limited amount of these items available

*It's in very good condition

Always Shop on Discount Day to Save Money

I took it to the register with the rest of my purchases and because it was Senior Day (55 and over here in GA), instead of paying the $6.98 marked, I paid $5.23. Once home I was unsuccessful in wiping the price off the bottom of it. So, rather than face rude comments about how much I paid for it and how much I was selling it for, I crossed the Goodwill price off with a permanent marker. When listing it, I would describe it as "price on bottom blacked out with marker." In the listing, I wouldn't say I had personally done this so chances are no one would complain.

Take the Middle Price on eBay

I don't know if you have heard but as far as listings go, if you want to sell an item on eBay, it's best not to be the highest price, not the lowest price...the highest price is probably not going to sell your item if buyers can see they can get it less expensively from someone else. And pricing your item the lowest will often not result in a sale either because people think there must be something wrong with it if you are selling it dirt cheap.

And so I decided to list it at auction for a price of $34.95 to start. If it didn't sell in the first round, I knew I could always drop the price the next time I listed it.

Auction Results

Since this auction was a 10-day listing, I honestly did not pay much attention to it for the first few days. But 48 hours after listing it I saw that it had a bid at $34.95! I was thrilled and would have been very happy with that price for it. BUT the next few days brought in a flurry of excitement as 12 more bids came in and it ended up selling for $51.00! Plus, they paid for shipping so all together, the buyer paid $63.95 for a Disney Princess picture frame with a small snowglobe on it.

Here's a breakdown of how much I earned in profit:

Paid $5.59 (includes sales tax)

Sold for $51.00

Minus the $5.59

Minus the 15% for eBay and Paypal fees equals a profit of $35.82

eBay Buyer's Motivation

Would I ever pay this much for a Disney picture frame snowglobe? No. Would you ever pay this much for this same item? Probably not, but you never know what a buyer's motivation is. Someone out there may have a daughter who had this same item and lost it and is heartbroken. Or maybe they had this item as a child and loved it but it broke. You know what they say, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." And here's a case that proves it.

Make Sure to Check Item Prices on Your Phone Before Buying

So the next time you are at Goodwill, the Salvation Army, Savers, or any local thrift store, keep in mind that Disney items and snowglobes sell very well. Don't forget to check the current listings and sold listings on the eBay app on your phone before buying the item, though. It can save you a lot of money and anquish because you don't want to spend money on an item and then get it home and look it up on eBay and find it's not worth anything. After all, the reason to sell on eBay is to make money, not to lose money.

Have you sold anything on eBay lately that surprised you because it sold for so much money?

Happy thrifting,

Karen

Making Money While You Sleep?

I have always dreamed of making money while I sleep. Being an entrepreneur at heart I thought it sounded like a great way to earn money. I wanted to set up a business and figure out how I can have that business make money for me while I am sleeping. Not only did I find that with eBay, but I also found out how to make money while on vacation! If you are an eBay seller, or you would like to be, pay attention here because eBay can make you money while you are on vacation!

Making Money With eBay in Vacation

Recently my husband and I went on a two-week vacation. Normally when we go away, I put my eBay store on vacation, and make sure that none of my items are visible to customers while we are away. I also make sure all of my auction items have ended. My feedback score is at 100% with a score of almost 600 and I didn’t want to mess that up by having people buy things while I am away and my not being able to send their purchases out if we were away from my eBay items. But I recently found a way to circumvent that problem.

If you have an eBay store, and you are going to put your eBay store on vacation, you can bulk edit all of your listings to lengthen your shipping time. This means if you have something sell while you are away, and you set the time to allow you to have time to ship it when you return from vacation, you are covered by eBay and people can’t give you negative feedback scores because you shipped late. In fact, under your listing, it even says how much time it will take for the item to ship. And did you know that the shipping time counts business days only? That’s right, Sundays and holidays aren’t included in eBay shipping time.
So here is what I did: I set my shipping time to 15 days on all my items. Because we were gone 2 weeks, which is 14 days, and there were two Sundays included in that time period, that allowed me 3 days to pack any items that sold and get them to the post office and shipped out after we got back.

The First Week of Vacation

The first week we were at a hotel where we had internet access. I was thrilled to sell three items that week and after each sale. I sent the buyer a message thanking them for their purchase and telling them I was away and would ship the item when we returned and gave them a shipping date.

The Second Week of Vacation

On the second week we were on a cruise and due to the high expense of purchasing internet minutes on a cruise, I decided not to check my eBay store while we were away! This also gave me a much-needed break from selling on eBay. If you are like me, sometimes eBay can seem to take over your life! You can imagine my surprise and excitement when I checked my eBay store when we hit dry land…

Total eBay Sales While on Vacation

With 425 items listed, I sold 8 items with a total purchase price of $198.96!

And I didn't do anything to earn it except sleep and enjoy my vacation! I did have to take shipping and eBay costs out of that total, but I still cleared approximately $125.00 while I was on vacation. And part of that money was earned while I slept. So not only did I learn to make money while I sleep but also I earned money while on vacation!

If you don’t have an eBay store, and you are taking a short vacation, you can still set the shipping times on your items to the longest amount eBay will allow that will cover your time away. Otherwise, you will have to make sure all of your listings have ended before you leave in order to keep happy customers and a good feedback score!

Do you make money while you sleep or when you are on vacation with eBay?

Well, I am actually waiting for 45 auctions to end, but 2 in particular. I wrote a few posts ago about a pair of Allen Edmonds men's shoes that went at auction for $113.50. I have two more pair that have active auctions going on right now.It is so exciting to watch the auctions as the bids come in.

The first pair I have for auction are black Allen Edmonds tie oxford shoes that I started at $34.95. With three minutes left to go on the auction, the highest bid is $46.00. Not as good as $113.50, but I am very happy with that.

The second pair is in excellent condition, except for one deep scratch that will be covered by pants and can probably be filled in with shoe polish. The auction on that one will end in 57 minutes. I started these shoes at $39.95 with the buyer paying shipping. Right now, the highest bid is at $82.00. I can't wait to see if that is the final bid of if they will go even higher. These shoes are in even better condition than the ones that went for $113.50.

I really enjoy selling on eBay, as you may have figured out by now! But I especially enjoy the thrill of an auction and how much more money it is possible to make at an eBay auction as opposed to a "buy it now" listing on eBay. It truly is best to have a combination of items listed some as "buy it now" and some as "auction." The auctions bring potential buyers to also look at your "buy it now" items as well. And that can earn you more money on eBay through more eBay sales.

<strike></strike>I will update you soon on how much each pair of shoes sold for. Stay tuned...

The shoes I am talking about were a pair of men's Allen Edmonds shoes. This pair of shoes goes for hundreds of dollars, new. The perplexing thing is that these were not new and I paid $4.25 for them at Goodwill. And I said in the description that they had been resoled and re-heeled.

Listed for Auction

I listed the shoes for sale on eBay through an auction format for 10 days. A few days after I listed them, I received a message from a potential buyer asking if I had any plans to add a "buy it now" price for these shoes. I thanked him for asking but told him that no, I didn't have any plans to add a "buy it now" option. You see, a few months before, a buyer had suggested I end the auction early on a book I had for sale because he wanted to purchase it at the price I had listed. I did do that, but decided not to do that in the future. I was thinking after the fact, that maybe that book could have sold for more money if I had let the auction ride.

Riding it Out

As far as these shoes were concerned I didn't want to change anything at the request of a buyer because I was thinking I might be able to get more for them if I let this auction ride. And in the end, I was right to do that. Had I put a "buy it now" price on the shoes, I probably would have asked only $50 and been shortchanged by $63.50 by the ending price which was the $113.50...plus he paid for shipping.

The Morning After

I went to bed on the Sunday night the auction was ending, and there was only one bid on these shoes. It was at my original starting price of $34.95. I assumed that was what they would sell for. Imagine my surprise when I woke up the next morning, checked my eBay account and saw that they had sold for over $100...and by the buyer that had asked me about the a"buy it now" price. Before I shipped the shoes, I decided to make sure he understood that they had been re-heeled and re-soled. I didn't want to take a chance that he would receive the shoes and want to return them because he hadn't realized that. He sent me a message back right away stating that yes, he had seen that in the description.

Holding My Breath

I sent the shoes, and then held my breath (not literally!) because there was still a chance that the buyer could receive them and not like them and want to return them. I have a 30 day return policy so it could have been a long wait. Fortunately it was not. Just a few days after I sent them, the buyer gave me glowing feedback about the shoes, and I breathed a sigh of relief!

Would you pay that much for used shoes on eBay? Do you often sell things on eBay that sell for more than $100? I am sure my readers would love to know so please share your comments below.
<strike></strike>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-46493227374264154072016-08-24T11:54:00.000-07:002016-08-24T11:54:04.834-07:00Returns Are Just Part of the Game With eBay
I had a return yesterday. I find returns SO annoying, and especially when a buyer is returning an article of clothing. In all of they years I have been selling on eBay (since 2010) I have had only six returns, and five of them were on clothing. Now I would be a bit more understanding if the size and the measurements were not listed in the description. But I am very careful to always include the size in the title AND also in the description, but also I give specific measurements which include at least the armpit to armpit, shoulder to shoulder, and length of each article I list. I usually sell shirts, sweaters, vests and jackets so I don't need to include inseam measurements such as on pants. That's one of the most challenging parts of selling clothing on eBay is all the measurements that need to be included to help an item sell more quickly, but I do well selling clothes so I just deal with those pesky measurements.

I Started Off NOT Taking Returns

When I first started selling on eBay I didn't even take returns. They seemed to be too much trouble. After doing some research and reading about the value of offering returns on an eBay Facebook page, I decided to offer returns. It seems many people are reluctant to purchase an item if they know they can't return it. After all of this time though, and the fact that I don't get many returns, I have come to just accept the return, refund the buyer only after I have received the item back, relist it and move on. I know if the buyer gives a reasonable explanation for the return, the best thing to do is just roll with it and move on. The funny thing is, I almost always resell the item within 30 days of relisting it. So that's good news.

Yesterday's Return

My most recent return was on a Levi Strauss denim jean jacket. These are highly sought after and so I didn't think I would have any trouble selling it when I picked it up at Goodwill. It sold at auction the second week it was listed. But the buyer never paid. I relisted it, and it sold again fairly quickly. This time within a few days of my shipping it, I had a return request. The buyer said it didn't fit right...it was too big? Apparently she hadn't paid any attention to the measurements I had listed. Those are important.

This is a really nice jean jacket so I am hoping that the third time is the charm. I will relist it again as soon as I get it back and hope that this next time it sells it sticks for good.

How about you? Do you get annoyed with returns on eBay? Do you even take returns?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-84986619423566535602016-05-12T06:27:00.000-07:002016-05-12T06:37:35.747-07:00Missing eBay While I Was on Vacation
Last month my husband and I went on a long awaited 14 day cruise. At the end of the cruise we stayed a few extra days in the port we ended up in: Copenhagen, Denmark. We had waited for seven months for this cruise. Every few days my husband would ask me how many more days till the cruise. At first it was a total guessing game on my part. When you start planning for something approximately 210 days in advance, it's easy to be off a few days or even weeks.

But finally the long awaited day came and off we flew to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to catch our cruise ship, the Regal Princess. We headed out to sea on Sunday, April 17th. I was finally able to relax. No more worries about how many items I sold on eBay the night before, or the week before. No more totaling up my sales for the week, or for the past month. No more planning my next thrift store shopping day and bringing home my purchases and soaking, washing, drying and listing them all on eBay and hoping for sales. No more logging into eBay each morning and revising 5 items. No more stressing out over trying to get the sold items packaged up and mailed out to my customers as quickly as possible. At least no more of this for 18 glorious days. But a funny thing happened at the end of my first five days on the cruise:

I MIISSED eBay!

I was quite surprised. I have never before had a job that I missed while on vacation. But here I was, off on a wonderful romantic cruise with my husband, exploring the world, and I missed my work. I missed logging into eBay to see if I had sold any items overnight. I missed going to thrift stores and hunting for treasures that my eBay customers would enjoy. I missed logging into my Paypal account and seeing the money that had accrued there thanks to eBay. And I was quite surprised by the fact that I missed it so much.

There are a lot of positives about having an eBay business. I am able to plan my day according to whatever schedule I want. I LOVE going bargain hunting, a trait my mom instilled in me from the time I was a child. I love the fact that sometimes I find something on a thrift store rack that is so beautiful I can't believe someone discarded it. And I just can't leave it there because I know someone will find it in my store and be as impressed with it as I am. I love getting reports from happy customers.

So, while it is nice to get a little bit of a break from my everyday routine, apparently, I love my work as an eBay entrepreneur and really miss it when it's not available to me. So here's to eBay and running my own eBay business. Can you say you miss your job when you go away on vacation?

Here's a picture of me enjoying my last day of vacation in the harbor of Nyhavn, in Copenhagen, Denmark:

I mean it's just a bunch of other people's junk? Well if you, like me, believe that, "One man's junk is another man's treasure" as the saying goes, you will want to guard your cart when shopping at Goodwill and other thrift stores. Recently I have had two bad experiences happen to me because I wasn't guarding my cart.

The Cashmere Sweater Incident

The first instance happened when I was shopping in a Goodwill store. I had all of my items in my cart and was headed to the check out area when I decided to just stop by the men's sweater area to see if I could find any cashmere sweaters. I had recently been doing research on what types of clothing sells well on eBay and I read that cashmere sweaters always sell. So you can imagine my excitement when I found a camel colored men's cashmere mock turtleneck sweater on the rack, with absolutely no holes or flaws. I excitedly put it into my cart and because it was the last item in my cart, it was on top of a pile of clothes. When I got in line, I realized that I had forgotten my wallet in my car, so I had to run out to the parking lot to get it. Wanting to keep my cart in a convenient area, I asked the cashier on the end of the line of cash registers if I could keep my cart near her while I ran out to the car to get my wallet. She said, "sure" and I parked my cart between her and the jewelry counter, at the front of the store. How long does it take to go out and get a wallet? Not very long. I imagine it was actually less than five minutes. I came back in and retrieved my cart and headed to the end of the line. As I was standing there I looked down and it seemed to me that something was missing. I counted all my items, and knew I had found 12, but only 11 were in the cart. Then I realized it: the cashmere sweater, my prized purchase of the day, was missing!

I got up to the counter and the cashier, trying to make conversation, said, "Hi, how are you today?" I am sure she didn't expect a real answer but I gave her one anyway because I was so annoyed. I said I was not doing very well because someone had taken a cashmere sweater out of my cart. She looked at me a bit wide eyed and asked very quietly, "Was it tan?" I was surprised that she asked this and I said yes. She told me she checked out a woman, and while she was checking out the next customer, a younger woman that she assumed was her daughter, the lady came back, threw a tan sweater onto the pile and told the younger woman to pay for it and she would pay her back. I was really annoyed and told her where my cart was and that I had asked the cashier on the end if I could leave it there. She must have gone by, saw the sweater, grabbed it and headed back to the cashier. I was so upset that day and felt I had actually been robbed. The cashier felt badly too, as though she was somehow part of this injustice! I assured her it wasn't HER fault. BUT then someone mentioned to me that the woman might have thought that was a cart of items to be re-shelved and that they were up for grabs. That was the only way that was emotionally healthy enough for me to resign myself that the sweater, my very first cashmere treasure, had been taken, and so that's what I will assume. BUT from that day on, I always head first to the men's department of the thrift store I am in, find a very large shirt, or coat and hook it to the seat in the cart, so that my treasures underneath will be concealed from prying eyes. Then before I go to the checkout, I put the shirt or coat back on the rack I got it from. Here's a photo so you can see what I mean.

The Potty Break Incident

The next time something happened because I wasn't guarding my cart was just a few days later. I went into a thrift store outlet (my favorite place to shop for eBay items) and I had put four items into my cart and realized I had to use the rest room. I parked my cart at the end of an aisle not far from the rest room, and was in the rest room for only a few minutes. When I returned, my cart was GONE! I thought at first that I just didn't remember where I had left it, so I wandered around a few aisles to see if I could find it, but it was nowhere in sight. Although it wasn't a full cart (thank goodness) those four items had taken me a half hour to find, so it was wasted time. I looked around at the carts nearby shoppers were using and my items weren't in them, so I decided to check a few of the racks and see if my items had been put back. Sure enough, there they were all hanging back on their original racks. The store was fairly busy so I was surprised the clerks had had the time to discover my unguarded cart and put the items back! I think I will make up a sign on an index card stating not to touch the cart and that I will be right back and keep it in my purse for just such occasions in the future. I mean, when ya gotta go, ya gotta go, right?!

After these two back to back incidents, I have certainly learned my lesson. When you have shopped at thrift stores, either for yourself, or to sell on eBay, have any of you had any trouble with items disappearing from your cart when shopping?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-13869805210848682262016-03-07T11:11:00.004-08:002016-03-07T11:33:12.012-08:00Shaking in the Aisles at Goodwill
Periodically when I am in a thrift store, or more often than not, at a Goodwill store, I come across an item so amazing in terms of eBay profits, that I feel a bit dizzy and start to get a little shaky. Some of you who may not be eBay sellers may think I am crazy. But those of you who search thrift stores, Goodwill stores and yard sales for buried treasure know exactly what I am talking about.

A few of the items are worthy of sharing with you so here goes:

I was looking through a bin at a Goodwill not too far from me a few weeks ago. I was disappointed because I hadn't found anything worthy of the trip at first glance. So I found myself looking a bit harder in areas of that Goodwill store that I would normally not pay much attention to. One of these areas was the stuffed animal section. I know that there are some people that do really well selling plush on eBay. Ordinarily, I was not one of those people. But after the find below, which is a stuffed Marmot by the Steiff company, made in West Germany, I have changed my tune. I always look through the stuffed animal section now.

When I first saw this guy I didn't think much of him. But I am learning to read tags and when I noted a metal tag in his ear, I actually had a little bit of a chill run through my body! LOL...I'm not kidding! I peered at it through my glasses but couldn't read it at first. I think my brain was just not computing that I had found a Steiff stuffed animal in a bin at the Goodwill store! But when I brought it over to the light and read the name,"Steiff" on the tag, I nearly jumped for joy, and began, just a tiny bit, to shake with excitement. I asked a clerk what the cost of stuffed animals was and he said unless they are otherwise marked, it was $1.01. I have gotten into the habit of ONLY allowing myself to go to Goodwill stores on Sundays, the first day items with a certain color tag are marked down 50%, and Tuesdays, when as a senior (55 and over) EVERYTHING in the store is 25% off. That day was a Tuesday, and so with my 25% discount, I scored a Steiff stuffed animal for 76 cents! It hasn't sold yet but prices on the internet for this exact animal run $19 o $25 so I just have to be patient and wait for the right buyer.

By the way, if you, like me when I discovered this little guy, have no idea what a marmot is, it's similar to a ground hog/woodchuck. Silly me, I thought it was a beaver and couldn't find any for sale on eBay when I originally looked him up.

Next was this absolutely gorgeous men's Pendleton red plaid shirt. There it was, just sitting in front of me on the rack at Goodwill. It was beautiful; as beautiful a specimen of a classic men's red plaid shirt made by Pendleton can be. I knew whoever bought it would be VERY happy with it, so I snapped it up for $5.75 and of course it was on a Tuesday so I only paid $4.35 for it. It sold for $24.95 within 24 hours of my listing it and I made a clear profit of $12.70.

I was at another Goodwill store and had recently read that Dansko shoes/sandals are good sellers on eBay. I was soooo excited to see a pair of women's Dansko shoes in a Mary Jane style on a shelf at Goodwill. I grabbed them for a closer look and my mind was racing a mile a minute. I actually looked around to see if anyone else in the aisle had spied my treasure. I was all alone in that shoe aisle, quivering with excitement!(Okay, I will admit it doesn't take much to get me excited!) I took them home and listed them for $34.95. I was happy when they sold within a week. But alas, they didn't fit comfortably on the woman who bought them on eBay so she sent them back for a refund. I decided since they had sold so quickly, I would experiment with the price a bit and listed them $5.00 higher at $39.95, and they sold in 24 hours! Wow, that was thrilling! I ended up having to ship them to California, which costs more from where I live than shipping to the east coast. But I still made a profit of $17.00 and was quite happy with that. AND to top it off this second customer gave me fantastic feedback and said they were even better than I had described them. I love a happy customer!

Although I would like to find things that sell for this much of a profit and more on a regular basis, I still need to have items that are lower in value to sell things regularly and keep the money coming in each week. But I will always be on the lookout for treasures that I can sell on eBay and make a higher profit. My average sale earns about $12 in profit. I am finding that sometimes what I consider an eBay treasure may not actually bring me a huge profit, but is something I know is very good quality and will sell well on eBay fairly quickly.

How about you? Have you found any treasures that brought in some good money on eBay lately? What is the average profit you make on your eBay items?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-27881144755248598702016-03-03T19:36:00.002-08:002016-03-03T19:40:04.031-08:00You Can Find Brand New Items to Sell on eBay

Just for fun, I want you to take a guess at how much you think I paid for both of these items, in total, before you read the rest of this post. So go ahead and guess how much you think I paid, in total including tax, for the blouse and jacket in this picture, and write it down or just keep it in your mind.

I love a good bargain and I got 2 bargains at Kohl's this past week. It all started a few weeks ago when I went to Kohl's to use a gift card I received for Christmas. I waited to use it till I got a 30% off coupon in the mail. As I always say," A sale is good, a coupon is good but combining a sale with a coupon is golden." While I was at Kohl's I decided to buy some gifts I needed for an upcoming birthday, since they were having a great sale and I had the 30% off coupon to use on the gifts. When I checked out, I was given $20.00 worth of Kohl's cash to use the next month.

On Monday, I went to Kohl's determined to get something as close to $20.00 as I could. I was shopping for me, because we have a trip coming up and I needed something for it. But I could have just as easily have been shopping for new items to resell on eBay. I bought this blouse, normally $36.00, on sale for 60% off at $14.40, and the jacket, normally $36.00, on sale for 70% off at $10.80.

I also had my 30% off coupon to use. Then because both of them were on sale racks that said "take an additional 20% off the lowest ticketed price," even I was surprised when the clerk told me the final amount. I think she was surprised too! The total amount I paid out of pocket was...ready for it... 17 cents!

Now I am keeping these items for myself, but I am writing this on my eBay blog to show you how it is also possible to purchase items on sale in regular stores and resell them on eBay too. You just have to be a bit creative about it.

Okay, time to fess up...how much was your guess as to how much I paid for those 2 items? You can leave it in the comment section below...happy shopping, for yourself, or to resell on eBay!

I had heard that the Patagonia brand of clothing sells well on eBay, especially in men's clothing. But never had a chance to personally sell any items of this brand until this week. I was in a thrift store last week sourcing for potential items to sell on eBay. I happened upon a men's Patagonia Synchilla fleece vest. It was in perfect condition. I was so excited I had to resist the urge to shout for joy! I was with a friend and ran right over and showed her. She doesn't sell on eBay so she wasn't quite as excited about this find as I was.

I took it home, washed it, as I always do for all of the clothes I sell on eBay, and listed it. The prices for this same Patagonia vest were running between $18.00 and $35. I listed it for $32.00 with shipping included. It sold 2 days later! Now because I included free shipping, I will lose some of that, and including the eBay/Paypal fees and the cost of my original $2.00 I paid for it, I will still make a profit of $18.00. Not bad and an easy sell.

Some of you may be wondering if I could have sold it for more. I am sure that I could have, BUT that would mean it would be sitting around in my eBay closet for a lot longer. I already don't have much extra room in that closet. And within a few months, the warmer weather will be here and it may not have sold till next fall if I priced it too high. So I am happy with the money I earned on this Patagonia vest, and the fact that my bank account will be a bit fatter this week.

What do you think? Would you have priced this item higher even if it meant sitting on it and hoping for a buyer?

Suzanne A. Wells

I have been selling seriously on eBay for one year now. Before that I just dabbled here and there. But one thing I have learned for sure over the years is that you can learn a lot from other eBay sellers. I belong to a Facebook group called, "Stay at Home Moms Selling on eBay" and the founder of the group, Suzanne A. Wells, has been selling on eBay and making a living at it for quite some time now. She posts articles on the online website "The Examiner" and I always find them helpful. Last week I read an article she wrote about selling "ugly" shoes on eBay. The title interested me because I have been dabbling in selling shoes on eBay and my sales have been not too shabby!

My SAS Sandals Find

So I read her article, the basis of which was a lot of people have special needs regarding their feet and although there are some ugly shoes out there in the world, people will buy them for comfort, especially people who have diabetes and need special support shoes. I wrote some of the names down in my little notebook, and one of the names I wrote down was SAS shoes. They are designed for comfort. You can imagine my surprise and excitement when the very next day, I found a pair of SAS sandals (see above picture) in my local thrift store for $2.00! Personally I don't find them all that ugly, but I snapped them up and went home and researched how much they were selling for on eBay.

Although there were no shoes listed in the size 7N that I had found, I found a few of the exact same pair listed for between $26 and $40, some with shipping included and some without. I decided to list my SAS sandals for $35.00 with shipping included on Friday. They sold Sunday (that's in two days) for $35 and I expect that shipping will be $8.00 to $10, and after subtracting my initial $2.00 investment, I should make at least a $23.00 profit! Not bad in my opinion. I wish all of my items would sell that quickly.

Learning From Others

But the point of this post is that it can be quite helpful to learn from other eBay sellers, especially if you are just starting out. If you know anyone who is doing well selling on eBay, I suggest you talk to them and get some pointers. Also, you can go to the Facebook page for the Stay at Home Moms Selling on eBay group and join. Even though it says it's a closed group, they accept new people. That group has so much to offer and I have learned a lot from them.

Also, I would suggest that you check out YouTube videos for people who sell on eBay. They show you items they have bought and how much they have sold for, or how much they expect to get from each item. My favorite is a guy named Steve Raiken, but he puts his videos on YouTube under "Raiken Profits." The guy is a fountain of knowledge for how to earn on eBay, and he is from my old stomping grounds in Connecticut.

Do you know of any other good websites or people on YouTube that we can all learn from? If so, please leave the information in the comments below. Thanks, and happy selling!

Taking Break From eBay

I just got back from a fifteen day cruise with my husband. We were gone for 18 days all together. I have an eBay store and part of the reason I decided to get a store was so I could put my items on vacation as we travel frequently. After I got the store, I started hearing stories from other sellers about how putting their store on vacation caused a dip in sales for up to two weeks. That panicked me because I don't want to lose that kind of money. So, I did some research and asked people I knew that had a store. They told me that if possible, even when my store was on vacation, I should still get on daily and revise items and continue listing as much as possible. I had done this when we were on vacation within the United States. But it meant I couldn't actually get away and relax.

But for the cruise, I wasn't able to do this. We took a transatlantic cruise on the Royal Princess which started in England, then went to Holland, France, Spain, Portugal and the Azores. While we did have internet access, it takes so long to get online while on a cruise ship, and then longer to access websites, that it would really be wasting money to do anything on eBay while away. So I made the decision to put my eBay store on vacation, and not touch it till we got back, so I could actually take a vacation myself. I was feeling a bit burnt out anyway so really needed a break. The photo above is of me on the ship as we set sail from Southampton,England.

Whew, What a relief!

We were due back on Monday, September 21st, and I had a little extra time left on my shop internet account, so I went into my eBay account and took my store off vacation. I was surprised and thrilled the next day when we returned to see that I had a sale the same night I took my store of vacation mode, and two more sales on that day, the day we returned home. So in my situation, putting my store on vacation gave me a much needed break and it didn't seem to hurt my sales at all. I am thrilled and relieved that I will be able to do this in the future, and really get a true vacation. Do you have an eBay store? Have you put it on vacation and how did it work for you?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-86724629774916833662015-07-16T15:40:00.000-07:002017-01-30T19:18:44.547-08:00Spent $3.25 and Made $29.85 on eBay

I have to say I really LOVE selling on eBay. But you have probably already figured that out if you have read any of my other posts. I have so much fun finding things at thrift stores and reselling them for a profit. And the most fun I have is when something sells at a price that surprises me. That's what happened recently.

Selling Wallpaper Border

I had read on an eBay Facebook site that I belong to that wallpaper borders sell well on eBay. Huh, really? I didn't think anyone used wallpaper borders anymore. But when I saw some at a great price at a local thrift store, I decided to give it a try.

I found a plastic bin filled with packages of old wallpaper borders at the thrift store I go to quite often. I didn't really believe they would sell well, so I bought a set of four packages blue Marimekko 4 inch wallpaper borders, and then an extra one that was partially opened so I could show what the design was. There were plenty more, BUT I wanted to just proceed cautiously in case they didn't sell after all. The rolls had been around awhile and the UPC stickers on them were yellowed. A couple had rips in the plastic wrap but they were scrubbable and washable so I figured they would clean up well. I listed the 4 rolls on eBay, with the opened one displayed on top. I was very honest about their condition in my description. At first, I listed them at a price of $14.95 for the 4 rolls. I had no bites for a couple weeks so I started playing around with the price lowering it until it sold. The 4 rolls sold for $10.95 a few weeks after I listed them, and I threw in the open roll as well because it was still usable. So for that sale, I spent $1.25 on 5 rolls and sold them for $10.95.

List, Sell, Repeat!

The other day I happened to be in the same thrift store and found the same bin. There were another 4 rolls of the same blue wallpaper border in the bin, again each for 25 cents. There were only 4 this time so I could open a roll and show the design but I was hoping people would get the idea of what it looked like from my pictures. I also found a set of 4 rolls in the same Marimekko design, but in a putty color. I decided to give those a try as well.

I listed the 4 blue rolls for $10.95 again on a Saturday night. I woke up Sunday morning and checked my eBay site to see they had already sold. That night I listed the 4 putty colored rolls and...you got it, they sold within 24 hours as well! So all together I spent $3.25 for 13 rolls of wallpaper border and earned $29.85. Not a bad turnaround if I do say so myself!

Research and Learn

One of the most important things I have learned through my experience selling on eBay is that in order to do well and increase sales, a seller must always be willing to learn. I spend a lot of time on YouTube watching videos of successful eBay sellers. I also belong to a couple of eBay Facebook groups and people post questions all the time and we all learn from each other. What makes you a successful eBay seller?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-17603121733942958432015-07-02T09:59:00.000-07:002017-01-30T19:15:37.786-08:00My Life as an eBay Seller

I have been selling items on eBay on a regular basis for 21 months now, and I must say I am having a ball. It has been a roller coaster of ups and downs, but the longer I sell on eBay, the more I learn and the better I get at it. At first, I only sold items that I had around the house to get rid of them and earn some extra money. I found some Facebook eBay groups, and have been coached by a friend I met online and learned how to increase my sales slowly but surely.

In March of 2015 I decided to open and eBay store. Initially, my sales dipped a bit for a few weeks after I opened my eBay store and I thought maybe I had made a mistake. But after a few weeks, things started to pick up, and have been doing well ever since. Even though we are currently in summer which is traditionally a slow eBay season, I am doing better than ever. Am I rich because of eBay? No, but I earn money each week. Some weeks I surpass what I earned weekly as a substitute teacher. And let me tell you, being an eBay seller is a lot less stressful than substitute teaching, or working a 9 to 5 job that I don't like.

Once I decided to sell on eBay as a way to earn regular money each week, I knew I had to find sources for what to sell. I started going to Goodwill stores on a regular basis and added thrift store shopping to my repertoire. I love going to thrift stores and finding almost new, and sometimes new with tags clothing that I can pass on to my customers. People have called me "addicted to thrift stores" but what they don't see is the bigger picture. I shop at thrift stores as part of my job. It is fun, and I can make my own hours. Here's a picture of my favorite thrift store. It's local and most clothing items sell for $2.00 each with vintage and household items selling for 25 cents to $5.00.

Right now I have only an eBay Basic Store which allows me 150 free listings per month in any category, and 100 free listings in the collectible category as auction style. I may go to the next size store in the future but this works best for me personally right now due to a lack of storage space. My goal was originally to have 150 items listed at all times, but because I have been able to take advantage of eBay's free listing offers periodically, for the past month I have been at 200 items and my sales show that the increase has helped a lot. My goal is to always have 200 items per month listed, and when autumn hits, I will try for more since that's the best period for eBay sales.

Here's a little glimpse into my life as an eBay seller:

Monday: Wake up and check my eBay store to see the sales I had Sunday night. Sunday night is traditionally the best time of the week to get sales because people have had the weekend off and have been scoping out eBay and usually make purchases on Sunday nights before they go to bed. I get excited when I see I have sales. I spend the day packing sold items from Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday and head to the post office Monday afternoon to send off my packages. I live 10 minutes from a post office so it's convenient. Monday night I list a few thing on eBay and also revise a few more items that I already had listed as I have learned constant daily listings/revisions keep my items active within the eBay system and are more visible to buyers.

Tuesday: Check my eBay sales from the previous night. Head to the local thrift store that is closed Sundays and Mondays and they restock all of their items on Mondays which means the best choices of items are on Tuesdays. This is especially true on the last Tuesday of the month because the previous Saturday they had a pick up in a local community and have lots of great items to choose from. I come home and wash the items in baking soda as that takes any thrift store scent out, then in a regular wash. My birthday is at the end of July and once I turn 55 I will be eligible for 1/2 off all items at Goodwill in my part of Georgia so I will be going shopping at one of the area Goodwill stores each Tuesday starting in a few weeks. Tuesday nights, I take pictures of the items I purchased and list them on eBay.

Wednesday: Check eBay sales. Go out to lunch and grocery shopping with my husband. Come home and put groceries away before checking my eBay sales. Had a sale while we were out to lunch...yay! In the afternoon I pack any sold items and go to the post office to mail them. At night I list a few more items and revise a few. Watch a You Tube video of a guy named Raiken Profits who I have learned a great deal from in terms of what to sell. I check sales before going to bed.

Thursday: Check for eBay sales in the morning, email either of the 2 clients I am now selling items for if they had a sale. Go about my day and pack and ship any items that have sold before the post office closes. At night, list a few more items and always revise a few. Check for any sales before going to bed.

Friday: Hit any nearby yard sales, estate sales or thrift stores to get more stock to resell. I usually do this every other week as I don't have enough storage room to go weekly and store all my bargains. I come home and wash all clothing in baking soda then in a regular wash. Hang all clothing so I can spend the weekend taking pictures and listing and revising items that are already for sale. Go out to eat with my husband. Check eBay sales and get excited when I see I have had 1 to 3 sales. Friday nights have now become my second best sales period. I have heard it's because people get paid on Fridays and like to buy on Friday nights. I list or revise a few items before bed.

Saturday: Check eBay sales and pack everything that has sold from that morning and the night before to get them mailed before the post office closes at noon. Saturday night I usually list a few more items and always revise. I check for sold items before bed, and there are always one or two that happened while I was out with my husband or just watching TV.

Sunday: This is my biggest listing and sales day. I usually check for sales after church and get extra happy when I see one. I have an enjoyable and relaxing afternoon and list and revise at night. I check sales before going to bed.

And there you have it: an average week in the life of this eBay seller. I currently only list 1 to 5 items a night and revise 1 to 3 a night as well. I like to spread my listings out over the week and it takes an hour of concentrated time to list 4 items. It's about 15 minutes each to do it right, which includes:

*Taking pictures of the item (I try for a minimum of 4 for each listing)

*Researching how much the particular item has sold for in the past and what similar items are currently listed for so I know what I should list it for.

*Putting a well-worded listing on the eBay site and including pictures.

About once per month eBay offers a special deal where you can list an incredible amount of item for free for a 5 day period. They decide if the listings will be an auction, which is limited to 7 to 10 days or Buy It Now for a 30 day period. During those times, I shop and extra time and spend the whole 5 days of the offer listing as much as I possibly can.

Over the 21 months I have been selling on eBay I have done a lot of research into which niche works best for me. I have found it to be men's shirts in sizes large through 5X. I do sell other items as well, including coats, shoes, belts, ties, women;s clothing and some antiques/vintage items. But I am happy to have found my niche and am starting to get repeat customers.

I love finding nice items that I know my customers will enjoy. And I am not an eBay seller that has extremely high prices on their items because I'm a bargain hunter and love to share savings with others. Here's an example of a great deal I was able to pass on to a customer. The Chaps shirt in the picture was for sale at Christmas in Kohls for $60.00. I know that because I saw it and loved it but am too frugal to pay that much money for a shirt. I found one at a thrift store that was a size 3X (not my size) for 75 cents and sold it to a customer who absolutely loved it for $11.95. She raved about how nice it was in her feedback, and that made me feel great that I could pass it on to her at a reasonable price.

I love selling on eBay because it allows me to have time at home with my husband (and my dog), have a flexible schedule, and to still earn money. I probably average 2 to 3 hours per day on my eBay business and can put my eBay store on vacation whenever I need to. If I want to earn more money, I just need to put in a little more time. If I can't get to the post office one day, I will ship 2 days of purchases the next day because I have the flexibility to do that. It's a great way to earn a living.

By the way, I just checked and in the 40 minutes it took me to write this and add pictures, I made an eBay sale! Can you say,"Ka-ching?!"

If you are an eBay seller, how does my schedule compare to yours? If you aren't an eBay seller but have been thinking about it, what's holding you back?

These bike bib shorts did the best of all my items in May. They were new with tags, and the price tag was $100. I sold them for $52.

I had heard that listing every day increases sales ever since I started on eBay. Even if it's only one or two items, that action gets picked up by Google and eBay and generates a higher viewing slot when people are searching for items.

Auction Listings

But originally when I first started selling on eBay, I only sold items by auction only. And I was told that items sold the most if they ended on a Sunday night auction. So I listed items each Sunday for a seven day listing, to end the following Sunday night. That worked fine for me. And for any of you who are doing that, I have also found that ending an auction on a Friday night works well too. People that get paid on Fridays are shopping on eBay Friday nights and I have had a lot of success with listings ending on Fridays as well as Sundays. The trouble with having your auctions ending on only certain days means you can't list every day. You can only list items 10 or 7 days, etc. before you want your auction to end. But that was when I was only dabbling on eBay to make some extra money.

Show Me the Money

But now that I have decided to branch out and start an eBay store to earn more money as part of my regular income, I have learned it is true that listing items every day really works to have consistent sales. During the month of May, I had an opportunity to list up to 2,000 items as a "Buy It Now" listing. I had been trying out the "listing every day" method, and found it to work well. Then when I got the 2,000 listings offer, I went to town and just kept listing items. I had to go out thrift store shopping twice to add to my inventory, but it has truly worked. I am selling and average of 1 to 2 items each day of the week now and it is very exciting. I have heard that as long as you go in and revise a few items on a day when you can't list , that works well also to keep the eBay activity going on your account.

Comparison Chart

To show you the financial difference, here's a chart to show you how much better I have done since I started listing every day:

March Sales: $247 with 16 items sold

April Sales: $262 with 23 items sold

May Sales: $433 with 35 items sold

What a difference listing every day has made. It is clear to me that keeping my eBay account active makes a huge difference in my sales. Are you listing every day on eBay? What technique has worked best for you to improve your eBay sales?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-77060553759916960832015-04-27T19:28:00.000-07:002015-04-27T19:28:17.199-07:00What's in Your Closet That Could be Earning You Money on eBay?

Ralph Lauren Wool Vest

About three months ago I bought this wool Ralph Lauren vest at a thrift store for $2.00. For some reason I hesitated to list it on eBay and it just got hung up in my spare closet with all the other items. Last week I was going through the closet and found the vest again. I looked it up on eBay and saw that the same vest had sold for $34.95 in January! Wow, and it had been sitting in my closet. I could have had some money in my pocket instead of a vest hanging in my closet!

Ralph Lauren Men's Shirt

Next to that vest in my closet was a Ralph Lauren button down men's shirt. I really liked this shirt and hung it in the closet, figuring I would list it someday soon. I forgot about it and also last week saw it hanging in my closet. So I pulled it out of the closet too, and listed it on eBay.

Items Can't Sell if They Aren't Listed

Both of these items sold within one week of my listing them. I started the vest as an auction and a bit low because I felt like since it is not the time of year to wear a wool vest, I would start it at $19.95 and maybe a few bids would come in. Only one came in halfway through the week, but I sold the vest for $19.95. That money is better in my pocket than hanging on a hanger, don't you agree?

The Ralph Lauren Shirt sold for $13.50, and the starting bid of $12.95 came in for it within two days after I listed it. All told, that is $33.45 that I made in one week, on items that had been hanging in my closet.

What items do you have in your closet that you could be earning money on right now?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1426234974698889210.post-41015650382713575922015-04-16T09:13:00.000-07:002015-04-22T07:06:08.162-07:00Every Sale Counts on eBay
I had a certain monetary goal I wanted to reach by this week from my eBay sales and from freelance writing. I really wanted to meet that goal yesterday but I didn't make it. But that's okay, I really have till Monday to reach it. I decided to list as much as I possibly could this week, said a prayer yesterday morning, and hoped for the best.

Within 2 hours, I had a sale. I have had this Hard Rock Cafe Jacket listed for two months. I got it for $2.00 and was optimistic it would sell right away. I tried it at all different price points as an auction starting at $19.99 all the way down to $9.99 at one point, considering similar jackets were going in that range. Finally I decided to list it as a "buy it now" or BIN as it called in eBay lingo, and hope it sold at some point. That was my sale yesterday, for $13.95. I certainly did not make a killing on it, but after I took out my initial cost, I still earned $12.00 toward my goal this week.

This morning I woke up and was checking my email and saw I had another sale. It was for this LL Bean jacket that I have also had listed as an auction for a few months. I just recently dropped it to a BIN status, and raised the price from $12.95 to $15.95 and it sold! Again taking the $2.00 off for the initial price I paid, and I still earned $14.00 for it.

In less than 24 hours, I earned $26.00 toward my goal. And actually I still have 148 items listed in eBay and since the best selling time is usually on the weekend, I have high hopes that I will hit my goal by Monday morning. Even small sales periodically all add up to making financial goals through eBay. If you have wanted to start selling on eBay, what are you waiting for? You too could have earned money in the last 24 hours!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6
